Here is a simple step by step guide of how to make a compass with nothing but a leaf, paperclip and a puddle when you are lost:
- Straighten out the paperclip and bend a piece off.
- Rub the end of the paperclip against your clothing several times.
- Place the leaf in the puddle and put the paperclip on top.
- The end you rubbed will eventually point north.
The way this works is when you rub the paperclip against your clothing it gets charged with electrons and that is attracted to the north like a magnet.
Compasses work the same way but the end that points north is a magnet.
