The Earth

How did the Earth begin?

Around four and a half billion years ago there was nothing but vast, dark very hot clouds of gas and dust flowing round the newly formed sun. The planets were created when the clouds gradually cooled and the gas began condensing into billions of droplets. Very slowly the droplets fused together into clumps by gravity. This carried on happening until they formed planets, Earth included. However it took another half a billion years before the earth had cooled enough to form a solid crust with an atmosphere.

How long is a day?

The day is the time Earth takes to turn 360 degrees once. The stars are back in the same place in the sky every 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.09 seconds. An Earth day is 24 hours because the Earth moves around the sun and must turn an extra one degree for the sun to stay in the same position in the sky.

Why does the Earth spin?

The reason the Earth spins is because it is falling around the sun. As the Earth moves around the sun, the gravity of the sun keeps it spinning so the Earth can stay in the solar system.

What is the Earth made of?

The Earth’s core is made of iron and nickel and the rocky crust of the earth is made mostly of oxygen and silicon. In between the core and the crust is the soft hot mantle of metal silicates, sulphides and oxides.

How long is a year?

Every year the Earth travels around the sun once. The journey made by Earth every year measures at 938,886,440 kilometres (548,018,150 miles). This journey takes exactly 365.24 days. Every 4 years the 0.24 of a day adds one more day in a year which is how we get a leap year.

How big is the Earth?

Measurements made by satellites show the Earth is 40,024 kilometres (24,870 miles) around the equator and 12,578 kilometres (7,927 miles) across.

Fact of the day: “Witzelsucht” is a condition that causes people to have an uncontrollable urge to make jokes.

Joke of the day: What do you all it when a hen looks at a lettuce? A chicken Caesar salad.

Riddle of the day: Mr. Smith has 4 daughters. Each of his daughters has a brother. How many children does Mr. Smith have?
